Description

Since its inception in 1903, the Elks National Home has figured as one of the principal institutions of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, today the largest fraternal organization in the nation. The Home at first occupied the Hotel Bedford, an 1890 Queen Anne building located on a picturesque site in Bedford, Virginia. In 1914-16 the hotel was replaced by an impressive complex of Classical and Mediterranean Revival buildings to provide an up-to-date retirement home for elderly and indigent Elks.
