I remember coming home from school one day and was surprised dad was home. They were cleaning up the living room and getting ready for "the press." Wasn't really sure what "the press" was but he told me, as president of the Roanoke Merchants Association, they had decided to turn the star off for the first time since it was permanently turned on. I thought it was really sad and a bad idea - why turn the star off!? He explained we were in the middle of a severe energy crisis (70s) - the same problem that caused mom an hour wait to get gas. It was controversial, exciting with the press, and probably the right thing to do!?
